Finding inspiration in
the beauty of the natural world, I paint landscapes of local
gardens, woods, and lakes with passion and vitality. In each of my
paintings, I explore the visual idea in the landscape that inspired
me and give close attention to the beauty surrounding us. My
extensive layering of color and creative use of light brings out the
magnificence of the land and water of the Lake Superior watershed
region.
In 1985, I accepted a teaching
position in Drummond, Wisconsin, drawn to the north woods by the
natural splendor of the Chequamegon National Forest. After getting
established in the teaching profession of mathematics, I explored
creative pursuits. When my husband and I started our family in 1992,
I found that painting with pastels was adaptable to life with
children and established a north woods home studio. As they matured,
so did my passion for painting.
My pastel paintings
reflect a lifelong love of the outdoors. I use this medium because
of the immediacy and vibrancy of the sticks of pure pigment. The
paintings mirror the environment with significant layering,
texturing, dimension, and rich deep colors; capturing the light as
the sun filters through the autumn foliage or in the quiet stillness
of a winter day in the forest. I love the process of preparing a
body of work. It is similar to a swift current sweeping me along...
the energy generated from creating pushes me forward. One of the
best objectives about having landscape painting become a part of my
life is the awareness each day offers, and the exciting possibility
of a new composition. I feel the intensity of being alive and am
continually aware of the natural beauty all around us.
