 Mary
McHugh has made her home in Drummond , WI for over twenty years after
growing up in various neighborhoods of Minneapolis/ St. Paul, as well as
spending a year in Berkeley, CA and London, England.
In the junior high grades Mary's favorite subject was math
but in high school she was excited by the art classes she took. However, she
joined the family tradition by becoming a high school math teacher in
Drummond in January of 1985. Starting in 1988 Mary took some evening art
classes and has been painting with pastels ever since.
In addition to her full time teaching and spare time
landscape painting, she is a wife and mother of two young teens, an avid
gardener, the high school newspaper advisor, a member of a local book
discussion group, and a leader in the Drummond Area Nordic Kids ski club and
the Friends of the Drummond Public Library organization.
Her paintings are of her favorite places... the meadow she
walks by nearly everyday on Delta Drummond Road, the Namakagon River, wooded
trails, local inland lakes and bays of Lake Superior, and gardens in morning
or evening light.
Artist statement:
'One of the best
things about having landscape painting become part of my life is the
awareness of the possible opportunity every day of creating a painting
composition.... looking outside at the morning sky, watching the light and
colors as I drive through the forest roads, wondering what light the sunset
will bring on the water or on the clouds. I feel the intensity of being
alive and am continually aware of the beauty all around us.'
