Birgit
Wolff is a member of the Wisconsin Regional Artists Association and the Chequamegan Bay Arts Council, as well as a coop member of the Bayfield
Artists’ Guild and the Superior Artists’ Gallery, where she also serves as a
board member. She is the Secretary for Superior Artists Gallery. She twice won the Wisconsin Regional Arts Program
competition, in 2003 with her piece “Dream Warrior,” and in 2004 with
“Nurturing.” Both pieces qualified to be included in the state-wide
competition in Madison. In 2004 her piece “Sunflowers” was selected for
inclusion in the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital Healing Art competition and
was subsequently purchased by the Hospital.
Birgit first learned to work with wool in Germany where she spent the first
ten years of her life. She spent over 25 years researching and lecturing on
air pollution and related environmental topics, and is now devoting her time
primarily to conveying environmental themes and messages through the medium
of art.
FELT
ART
Felt
is a non-woven material which is created by compressing wool and/or other
natural fibers with the help of heat, often hot water, and pressure, usually
the fingers. Prehistoric finds dating to 6500 BC reveal that felt has been
used from Scandinavia to Northern Africa, and from India to Russia.
Birgit works not only in the wet felting technique but also sculpts
selected pieces using a 4 inch barbed needle (dry felting).
The
sculpted pieces, such as the Nurturing series have NO thread or glue in
their construction.
OTHER
MEDIUMS
Birgit also dabbles in silk and makes stained glass and other jewelry.
